I am new to this community and we are still getting to know each other. If there is anything I have learned in the 32 years I have been working in public education, it is the importance and power of relationships. It gets us through the good and difficult times. We may not always agree, and the work is to find a way for us all to show up in schools, classrooms and communities as our true and real selves. One of the ways we get to know each other is to tell stories. We tell stories about who we are, who we imagine ourselves to be, the future for our children, the hopes we have for our communities.

Here is one way we can start to tell stories that I hope will help bring us together around our common passion for children, families, communities and schools.

Let's tell some stories. Let's talk about our children, our families, what brings us joy. I'll go first.

Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Taking time with my kid to choose ingredients, prepare meals, and eat together is a privilege and something that brings my family joy. Simple but meditative and satisfying.

Joy for me is found in connections. Connecting with family, friends and even making a connection to a place, to a song or to story. Travel especially brings me joy for instance.

    A snowstorm novel

by Tim G, over 1 year ago
Reading a good book in a warm house on a cold snow day is a peaceful kind of joy; a joy that has a “bonus” feeling to it. Part way into the short novel “The Archer” by Paulo Coelho, a young student looks to his new archery master for advice on learning the bow, which is a metaphor for learning to do life well. The master’s sage-like replies focus on how to learn from others and how to choose those people well, “Join with those who sing, tell stories, take pleasure in life, and have joy in their eyes, because... Baking

My 5 year old son and I started baking together when he turned 2. It brings us so much joy to do something together. We love measuring, eating batter and then excitedly look in the oven to see the end results. Now, my 1 year old daughter joins us in the process by babbling and clapping for us. This has helped us to set equal expectations for everyone’s role in kitchen as well.

    Joy Is a Wagging Tail

Our two dogs exhibit the meaning of joy every single day when we arrive home to waggly butts and happy faces. They love unconditionally. The picture of absolute joy in our home belongs to the faces of Bailey and Bella, our two amazing Labrador Retrievers. They make my heart full, and keep me feeling grateful.

    Looking at the Little Details

by cce2022, over 1 year ago
For me, what brings me joy is looking for the little details in life and nature that are easy to miss. When on a walk or in my garden, I notice the perfection of a leaf or the varied colours in a flower. I appreciate seeing a bird and its unique way it cleans off its beak or methodically pecks at a branch or watching a squirrel as it bops and hops along. I am joyful that my grown daughters are also see these little details and I smile when they point out the interesting texture of a tree or... Continue reading

by lexi…, over 1 year ago
Not many things bring me joy anymore, but when I’m having a bad day and nothings going right I can put on some music and all my worry’s float away. the way music can make me feel like a kid again and bring me back to some of my favourite memories is astonishing. music holds a special place in my heart for the soul reason it can lift my mood in seconds.

One thing i find that brings me lots of joy is doing visual arts. For example: Painting, drawing/sketching, different craftts. etc. Doing art brings me joy because i find it helps me to develop more creativity, and also helps me focus or feel better when im upset. My personal favourite type of art is drawing / sketching.

    What brings me joy :)

by Michele Cameron, over 1 year ago
What brings me joy is spending time with my children. Being a Mother is my greatest accomplishment. I love to listen to children belly laugh. Laughter is contagious, it makes everyone smile.
